LECTURE/TRUNK SHOW OPTIONS:

My 30 year Quilting Journey
I will share 15 > of my quilts that reflect my creative journey.  A journey that began with my feet planted in traditional designs to a current Modern Traditionalist style. Lots of stories and laughs to keep you entertained and inspired. (60 minutes)

Let's Get Wonky!
Part 1 is the Let’s get Wonky presentation of how we 'break the quilting rules' to change traditional blocks into modern WONKY blocks, small projects, and quilts.
Part 2 discussion addresses what is, who is a Modern Traditionalist quilter?  Let's take a look at my quilts and talk about who to combine traditional and modern styles, and just how my Kwilty Pleasures happen.

Let’s Get Wonky Lecture Resource List
  • I have compiled a comprehensive  ‘Resource List’ for my this presentation.  It contains lots of links to many links I may address.  I will provide that list to guild program coordinator or communication manager, once contract is signed. This list needs sent to the guild members PRIOR to this lecture. I prefer folks follow along visually vs taking lots of notes.
  • If guild offers paper handouts it is ine bpoage, double sided, amd guild will privide copies for distribution at lecture.
  • If guild wants me to provided copies I can make copies and provide a receipt for reimbursement.

A GHASTLIE TIME
Join me as I conjure up a collection of quilts and projects that defy the normal Halloween expectations.  Meet my favorite Halloween family, the Ghastlie. They've been lurking about in fabric, since 2009.  I am totally obsessed with The Ghastlies, created by artist Phillip DeLeon of Alexander Henry fabrics.  You'll see why I've been nicknamed "The Ghastlie Queen". I am honored and humbled to have a quote about my work from The Ghastlies fabric artist and designer, Phillip Deleon, "Kathy is the maker who can show other makers how to use the Ghastlies fabrics."

WORKSHOPS

Plaidish Quilt

Plaidish Quilt is an Erica Jackman design, and she has granted me permission to teach this workshop.  Her only stipulation is that ALL participants go to her website, sign up for her email and download their copy of the pattern.  I teach a one-day and two-day option for this ahhhmazing quilt.

OPTUON 1
ONE DAY PLAIDISH WORKSHOP (FEE - $500)

This is a 6-hour workshop to SEW the Plaidish blocks together.  ALL 567 pieces of fabric MUST BE CUT, prior to the workshop and according to the pattern suggestions of color values.  Participants will then begin by sewing 9 specific blocks and place on a design wall.  Photos will be taken of those blocks for participants to not only see the Plaidish magic begin to happen, but to ensure they understand how this concept works. Then they may continue to sew blocks as they wish.

OPTION 2
TWO DAY - PLAIDISH WORKSHOP (FEE - $900)

Day 1 - (6 hr) participants will bring their personal scraps / fabrics and a download of the FREE pattern, PLAIDISH, by Erica Jackman, Kitchen Table Quilting.  I will provide a short discussion on color values to the entire group, then talk with individuals, to review their fabrics, color values and contrasts.  Participants will then CUT the ALL 567 pieces needed.

Day 2 - (6 hr) participants will return to sew the Plaidish quilt blocks together.  I will provide block examples and tips (i.e. pressing, chain piecing).  Participant goal for this day is to sew 9 blocks in top left quadrant.  Photos will be taken of those blocks, on a design wall, to see the Plaidish magic begin to happen and ensure they understand how this concept works. Then they may continue to sew as they wish.

STACK n WHACK MODERN TREES
A one day (6 hour) workshop will provide an understanding of why wonky works by using old stack and whack techniques brought into this century with a modern twist.

Wonky Improv Log Cabin Quilt
Pick your favorite novelty print as the block focus piece and use lots of scraps, in 3 colorways, that coordinate with the focus fabric. SCRAPS will make a fun, wonky, improvisational blocks, sewn into any size blocks you choose. Perhaps you have always feared IMPROV design. This workshop will allow you to throw caution to the wind and make your first modern quilt.

REVIEWS:

I talked to you briefly at the Miami Valley Quilt Guild meeting and wanted to follow you on Instagram.  Very much enjoyed your 'Let's Get Wonky" presentation.  Learned some history and it was nice to get validation for my natural preferences…
Deanna Taylor @Deannataylor110 Miami Valley Quilt Guild, March 2025

I really enjoyed your presentation and your 'slant' on quilting.  I had an ah-ha moment.  I felt so connected.  I've never felt like I quite fit into a style and now I know a name for it!   (Modern Traditionalist).  So, I just wanted to thank you for your presentation and for promoting the 'where modern collides with traditional.'  It was a great affirmation for me…
