CHEROKEE MYSTERY FINISH!

Columbus Modern Quilt Guilds
Mystery Quilt Challenge for 2019!

Every other month we received a clue or instructions on how to
finish a unit of the mystery quilt.

Once I had the top completed my good friend Betty
quilted it for me on her Statler Gamill Machine.

My hubby thought this looked like an Indian Blanket design.
Betty used a Fire Flame for the E2E quilting.
I have 2 great-great grandmothers who were Cherokee Indians.
It was a Mystery Quilt design.

Therefore...
Cherokee Mystery

I finally got outside to get a few pics.

It was a bit windy...
perhaps some Cherokee winds blowing thru!

The mystery quilt designer is Meadow Mist Designs.
This pattern name is Mosaic Mystery Quilt.

2020 Mystery Quilt

Sometimes I get behind in my blog posts.
Regardless, I try to post interesting projects.
I am glad you are following me
and it is really nice when someone comments.
I don't feel so alone out here!

Sew in catching up.....
The Columbus Modern Quilters had another fun
Mystery Quilt Challenge for 2020.

I selected ALL the fabrics from my stash.
Several FQs in Orange, Mustard
with a White Grunge accent and a gray background.

I always challenge myself to use my stash
and figure out where to put the same colors
of different prints in the design.
You see, you won't know where the fabrics
will actually be in the "quilt design"
when you are making the blocks.

The first couple clues gave us fabric amounts
and cutting instructions. I label everything and
make a fabric card to help me pull the
correct fabrics for the blocks, once I began sewing.

There were lots of HTS pieces left over.
Some people would keep these or use them...not me.

The next clue made Economy Blocks aka Square in a Square.

Then we made 32 House Blocks

That looked like a village!

The next clue had us sew Flying Geese, full geese and half geese.
Somehow I have deleted that photo.

And when all pieces were assembled....
THIS is the entire block.

The last clue was the actual layout design.
Thank goodness...I would not have figured this out.
I have a good size  design board
and sticky notes helped keep my rows in order.

I sewed them all together and really love this design.
Here I was expecting some kinda design with "HOUSES'
cause all those HOUSE blocks.

Backing was next.  I searched my stash and found this fabric
that I had tried to destash several times!

It's A Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrowsky
for MODA.  A batik looking design
that lends itself to more folklore patterns.

Not quite enough to cover the entire back, but
I like to mix things up in my backings.
I made the center strip with several solid grays.

I added a small border to the top, in the gray background color,
allowing the top to float.
Stay tuned for the post about the finish1

I have to quilt this one, after my winter at the beach.

If you would like to see the other 2020 mystery quilts
done by member in our guild

WADO (thank you in Cherokee) for stopping by!

2020 COLUMBUS MODERN QUILTERS REVEAL

My modern quilting group,
The Columbus Modern Quilters
recently had an on-line reveal of our 2020 Mystery Quilt

We received a total of 7 Clues.
The last was the layout of this top.
I grabbed some screen shots.
(photos by quilters, power point by Leigh Morgan)

This is my Mystery Quilt.
My hubby thinks it looks like a Native American design.
I'll go with that....when deciding the name.
I plan to quilt this one in 2021.

Rachel never disappoints with her work.
There were lots of little HTS left over from
one of the blocks...they ended up in the backing.

Leslie brought some beautiful colors to the cutting table.
We had an option for borders, 1, 2 or none.
She used a white for the small border and a pink batik
that matches the inside squares of the stars.

Heather showed us how a vibrant background
makes her design shine.  Just like her little girl.

Tami gave us a softer look and used
slub canvas fabrics.

I wish more finishes were available to see.
2021 will get us back together, meeting in person.
I will guess that first meeting might be an
entire day of "show n tell"
Wouldn't that be wonderful!

2019 MYSTERIOUS SEWING

Sew here's the MYSTERY!

Leigh Morgan was the coordinator for the Columbus Modern Quilters
2019 Mystery Quilt Challenge
Every other month we received a CLUE or directions
to make a part of the Mystery Quilt.

Clue 1 was to pick fabrics
I decided to pull from my stash and used 4 tones in each color way!
Clue 2 was to cut the fabrics
I made an index card that showed the colors and their labels.
This makes it easy to figure out what goes where
when sewing pieces together.

Clue 3
Sew this block, using specific fabrics
and a specific layout

Clue 4
make more blocks with specific colors and instructions
(these will eventually go into other blocks
but we didn't know that yet)

Here you see clues
5, 6, 7 and
Clue 1 is the bottom Right block

Clue 8
These geese and economy blocks will become
parts of other blocks (we don't know that yet)

Clue 9 (yep here are those blocks from clue 8)

I love these blocks!

Clue 10
(these are put together from Clue 3)

And THEN we had to figure out how to lay the blocks out
WITHOUT any instruction.
I was in a dizzy tizzy until I started to think...
LOGICALLY
Yes sometimes I can do that!

Lay out all the block in order, the way the block finishes
(use the pictures / diagrams from the clues)
THEN begin in the center with Block 1...there was only 1 block
The next round only needed 4 blocks
The next round needed X number of blocks
The next round needed X number of blocks
and sew on until the final 4 corner blocks
are set and the 60" square quilt top is finished!

I love it!
I love that it is scrappy!
I love that I pulled from my stash to make this one!
I loved the great mystery most of all!

The reveal was Tuesday Dec 10th
And here they are...at least the ones who showed up for the reveal!

As the new year begins, I hope you have plenty of time for sewing.
Why not make a mystery quilt?
I have already started my 2020 MQ Challenge with
Columbus Modern Quilters.

MYSTERY QUILT FINISH

It's so fulfilling when a quilt is finished!
It's kinda like saying...go ahead with that new project!
And here are 3 of my "finally finished" quilts.

2012 Mystery Quilt - Cat's Meow Pattern
I led my work quilting group thru this Mystery Quilt project
last year.  Click here to see some of their quilts from
this challenge.  Amazing how colors give it a whole different feel.
I am so proud of their dedication and work on this challenge.
Michelle Mayton from Mansfield, Ohio
did a beautiful custom quilting design!

LOVELY CUSTOM QUILTING

STASH BACKING

My BFF, Shirley Haller, who lives in Indiana, quilted the next tow quilts for me as my Christmas present.  Now that is an awesome present that I won't be returning!   LOL

This is the NOVA pattern from the book Scrap Basket Quilts.
2 1/2" pastel batiks from a guild "fabric swap"
with a bold jewel tone batik to frame it.

QUILTING CLOSE UP

This 2012 quilt began as a Bento Box pattern.
I loved the Asian prints but the pattern
just wasn't speaking to me as I placed it on the design wall.
So I scrambled up the pieces and used my eyes to design the layout.
Now, I love it!

STASH BACKING

I will keep the Mystery Quilt, but the other Kwilty Pleasures
will end up as gifts to family members.

What's on your "finished" list?
