AIRING OF THE QUILTS 2022

I have attended the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guilds outdoor show

several times.  I get sew excited just thinking about this one.

I don't have all the makers names, sew just enjoy the pics

and pretend you are there with me, enjoying all the amazing

makers and makes.

THIS was my favorite!

I am not usually a solid color girl.

These colors set on the charcoal gray...screamed

STOP and look at me.

The quilting in an of itself was amazing.

The maker sent it out for long arm quilting.

A beautiful  traditional Lonestar top

in a Modern remake.

I am always drawn to a 'wonky" block.

These flying geese were amazing!

SEE YOU CAN CUT OFF POINTS!

While we are tracking flying geese...

this one caught my eye!

Sometimes a design element done in a different way

catches my attention. One should look beyond the fabric prints

to see the design.  i.e. I don't care for the prints but like the design.

NOW we are talking about a wonky log cabin modern design

I totally love!

One design idea into 3 pieces.

This quilt was a great design of Half Square Triangles

I enjoyed the design of this but

 the quilting is what really made this amazing!

I found some Charley Harper fabric quilts as well.

These were a challenge using same CH fabrics

And this CH really chirped!

Lots of challenge quilts.

Vibrant colors in a fun design, always catch my attention.

FLAMINGO SUNSET SCARF

My first knitting finish for 2022

Is the Panorama Scarf. 

This took just over a month and that wasn’t knitting everyday. 

It was a great Florida snowbird knit!

The pattern name is The Panorama Stole

 and it’s a free download over on Ralvery,

I used a Fingering weight sock yarn called

Flamingo Sunset.  Florida is full of 

Flamingos and beautiful sunsets !  

Now back in OHIO

We are still feeling the chill of winter.

It brings the warmth. 

All scarves look great with denim!

This one does not disappoint. 

I knitted this once pattern before. 

I barely posted a picture of it and a friend bought it from me. 

I have more yarn to get to…and I wonder 

What will be on my needles next?  

FIRST 2022 FINISH 4-PATCH SLICE

One of the sewcial distance quilts Kim Hensley and I sewed in 2021

was making a fun 4-Patch Slice quilt.

I  finished it as my first 2022 project!

Sometimes we begin, get the top done and then it’s timing

to get the quilts quilted and bound.

I used Wonder fabric line by Kate and Birdie

and it was perfect for a baby quilt.

The pattern I selected was by Inspiring Creations.

I like the different layouts she offered

and the wider insert strips.

Kim used some of her Bonnie & Camile fabrics.

I loved the way my baby quilt turned out.

Its a good size though 48" x 54"

Kim also long arm quilted it using an

Edge 2 Edge design with Moon and Stars.

Kim has been practicing on her new Innova

long arm machine and I am thrilled with the result.

I used GRUNGE Spots for the backing.

This is the perfect backing for it!

I decided on this triangular modern layout

cause I like different.

The 4patch slice pattern I used way by Inspiring Creations

Such a fun view of how one pattern can be sewn up and look so different. 

GEMMA’S FIRST QUILT

What a fabulous and fun finish for Gemma’s first quilt. 

This quilt  has been in the making since 2019 BC (before Covid)

We finally got it finished at the end of December, 2021. 

I thought a Jelly roll quilt would be perfect and teach her the basic skills.

I had plenty of scrap strips sew

Gemma picked out those she loved.  

Nahhhh…we never have any fun in my sewing room!

Gemma has never been afraid of the big sewing machine. 

Here she was about 8 1/2…and the project was underway.  

She easily managed sewing the strips together…end to end at an angle. 

I would show her, then she would do what I said and  

would explain what she was doing and why.

That’s how ya learn….

THEN she began mastering the 1/4” seam allowance.

If the sewing got off track…she had to stop, fix the issues and begin again. 

A seam ripper fits everyone’s hand.

She learned quickly how to manage the fabric feed

keeping the fabric straight and lined up along the edge of the 1/4” foot. 

She also learned how to press the fabric.  

Pressing is NOT moving the iron all over stretching the fabric. 

Lift and place. 

She also loved the spray starch lesson. 

The strips were simply magical as they came together !

She was sew excited to see what strip lined up against another 

This is about where we had to stop when COVID reared it’s UGLY head. 

When it was time to resume our journey together..

I did most of the work for layout and pinning the quilt sandwich.

This takes time and I wanted her sewing as soon as possible. 

I did leave a corner for her to pin….cause it’s an important step

in the quilting process. 

Now 10 years old, Gemma is back in the drivers seat, doing straight line quilting. 

She’s a bit taller and her foot now reaches the pedal.  

She was very focused quilting the lines down the middle of the strips.

Once she got the hang of it…the speed picked up a little.  

I made the binding and sewed most of it on while Gemma watched me, 

paying close attention to the mitered corners technique I use.  I let her work on those. 

My mitred corner philosophy…learn to do sew then correctly.  

Nothing worse than an ugly binding corner on a beautiful quilt. 

Gemma pressed the binding once it was sewn to the quilt. 

Then we used a serpentine stitch for a machine finish. 

I like to hand stitch binding finishes but we wanted to get this done

Sew she could take it home.

And DONE looks sew cute over her! 

Aunt Kathy is very proud of her!

Heres a good pic of the fun backing she picked out. 

Notice how much she has grown since we began this quilt 2 years ago. 

And now snuggling is at its best. 

Two happy people, right here !

I sewed a text label on for her with my Bernina. 

Uncle Phil had his photo taken with her and her quilt.

He ranted and raved about her work and how proud he was of her too!  

We have plans for another quilt in 2022.

She picked out a ‘rail fence’ pattern and fabrics from my stash. 

Look at this sweet girl, my great niece, who will celebrate her 11th birthday in April.

I can’t tell you how much teaching her to quilt means to me.
